Ruth's Favorite Sport!

Ruth Ann loved to fish from the time she could hold a cane fishing pole in her hand. She was quite good at it and always caught more fish than anyone else.  She would fish the two stock ponds behind our house.  She dug worms from the garden, caught grasshoppers in the grass, seined crawfish from the crawdad pond, bought chicken liver and you name it.  She even used weiners once and caught a good stringer of blue catfish.  She would take Satan with her when she fished the ponds and he would hunt for water mocassins and kill them.  Once she was fishing and one of her grandpa's heifers came up to the pond for a drink of water.  The dog was protecting Ruth Ann and jumped the heifer and they both wound up in the pond.  I just happened to look out the back door toward the pond and seen water splashing and could hear her screaming.  I ran to the pond and by then she and the dog were out on the bank and was wet and muddy. She said she jumped into the water because she thought Satan was going to kill or drown the heifer.  I gave her a good talk about how dangerous that was and it never did happen again. She fished on the ponds this summer and came to the house in the hottest part of August and told me there was a large water mocassin by the dock where she had been fishing.  She said, Mamma I want you to go down there and kill that snake.  A day or so later I killed it and she sure was glad.  We will miss the fishing stories and even more miss her going over the hill toward the ponds with her fishing rod and bucket of fish bait. (Ruth Ann was killed in an auto accident on September 20, 2008)!
